Somebody please tell the former colonial and current 'post' colonial masters that, "The princi[pal] goal of education is to create [people] who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done - [people] who are creative, inventive and discoverers."
--Jean Piaget
"Tell a child what to think and you make him a slave to your knowledge. Teach a child how to think and you make all knowledge [her] slave. --Henry A. Taitt
I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my feet.

"That’s the worst thing a woman can be in this world, isn’t it? Intimidating, which appears to be synonymous with competent. It’s the kiss of death, personally and politically."
~ Judith Warner
One Perspective: "Why does this woman – who to some of us seems as fake as they can come, with her delicate infant son hauled out night after night under the klieg lights and her pregnant teenage daughter shamelessly instrumentalized for political purposes — deserve, to a unique extent among political women, to rank as so “real”?"

"Even in this day and age, I saw women becoming “assistant-ized”— saddled with all the coffee runs and photocopying." ~Hannah Seligson, Sunday NYTimes.com 8-31-08
(And for me, I have been dealing with sexism long before I knew to call it that; true for experiences well into my late 30s. As I have said in writings: essays and poems-- I did not become a feminist until I came to Trinidad & Tobago in 2003)
"I remember that revelation--Jesus!--that I could only save myself. What kind of adult would go through life with just enough for herself? Just enough swimming skill, or time or love or money? Why pray for abundance and live out of scarcity?" ~ Lorene Cary "Roll Up the Light of Love"
'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.''

why single at 43: "Finally: Does he possess those character traits that add up to a good human being -- the willingness to forgive, praise, be courteous? Or is he inclined to be a fibber, to fits of rage, to be a control freak, to be envious of you, to be secretive? After I regale a group with this talk, the despairing cry goes up: ‘But you’ve eliminated everyone!’ Life is unfair."

"The term Five-Percenters derives from the belief that only 5 percent of the world’s people liberate themselves from worshipping a false “mystery God” and become gods to themselves and their families. Some consider it a black supremacist religion; its followers consider it an uplifting way of life."

Of the twenty-first century: "viral organization and fund-raising - a seamless fit with bottom-up democracy as it is increasingly practiced in the Facebook-YouTube era (blogs, video and social networking), not merely by Americans and not merely by the young."

One small but great aspiration: 'to hold oneself aloof from psychodrama'
"...Mrs. Clinton and Mr. McCain both completely misread a one-of-a-kind historical moment as they tried to cling to the prerogatives of the 20th century’s old guard. Remarkably, neither Mrs. Clinton nor Mr. McCain had the grace to offer a salute to Mr. Obama’s epochal political breakthrough, which reverberated so powerfully across the country and throughout the world. By being so small and ungenerous, they made him look taller. Their inability to pivot even briefly from partisan self-interest could not be a more telling symptom of the dysfunctional Washington culture Mr. Obama aspires to mend." ~ Frank Rich, NYTimes.com, June 8, 2008

"Arm Yourself" Smothered by stereotypes, catapulted into conformity, bombarded by barbarity, restrained by reality. In the midst of darkness, from the depth of the sea - faint, eerie cries of those who cease to be. Break free from your prisons the keys are in your reach; Unlock those who are hidden- it's your time to teach. Grasp the staff of creativity, it awaits your firm grip and the torch of singularity- hold it high and take a dip."

"Mr. Dodd said he was initially skeptical of a presidential campaign by someone in his first term in the Senate. But he said that “Barack Obama is a 21st century candidate who will express the aspirations and hopes of so many." "I suppose you can define luxury in many different ways, but at the end of the day, it is an experience, and a feeling — a special kind of magic, often lurking in the details, something that stands for being a cut above the usual. Where you find that for yourself is an open question...but the point is to live in a way that seeks it out — all the better for finding it in unusual places, all the better for thinking outside the box. ~ Alexander Olch
Being awakened this morning (2-21-08) in Maraval, Trinidad at 5:30am by a barking dog, a dog who is new to the neighbor(hood) and becoming an incessant barker and having to wear earplugs for the last hour of trying to recapture sleep, I read in the NYTimes an article on "More Americans are Giving up Golf", only to read the end paragraph: "One neighbor, Dominique Mendez, whose home is about 600 feet from the 18th hole, said, “We bought our house here because we wanted to live in a quiet place, and we thought a golf course would be nice to see from the window. Instead, people have to turn up their air conditioners or wear earplugs at night because of the music thumping.” During weddings, she said: “you can hear the D.J., ‘We’re gonna do the garter!’ It’s a little much.” So I see that my torture is not mine alone. That even the most powerful and monied of us, no matter where we reside are being victimized with little or no recourse. Yet, the consolation still astounds.
“It’s an uphill struggle, to be judged both a good woman and a good leader,”
said Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a Harvard Business School professor who is an expert on women in leadership. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/10/opinion/10kristof.html?em&ex=1202792400&en=503ca9e755178d46&ei=5087%0A
"Corruption and looting is often pervasive in underdeveloped countries because the dictator is not confident of his tenure (and needs to steal as much as possible while still in control), or because he needs to allow others to steal in order to keep their support."
~ The Underground Economist
My Wish for You in 2008:
May peace break into your house and may thieves come to steal your debts. May the pockets of your jeans (trousers preferred) become a magnet of $100 bills. May love stick to your face like Vaseline and may laughter assault your lips! May your clothes smell of success like smoking tires and may happiness slap you across the face and may your tears be that of joy. May the problems you had forget your home address! In simple words...
May 2008 be the best year of your life!!! ~ sent from Sandra Chibwe

"For every nine people who denounce innovation, only one will encourage it...For every nine people who do things the way they have always been done, only one will ever wonder if there is a better way. For every nine people who stand in line in front of a locked building, only one will ever come around and check the back door. Our progress as a species rests squarely on the shoulders of that tenth person. The nine are satisfied with things they are told are valuable. Person 10 determines for him or her self what has value." Be that 10th Person

"In 2003, the economists Michael Dooley, David Folkerts-Landau and Peter Garber* proposed what has since been known as the Bretton Woods II theory. The idea is based on the observation that newly industrialized countries peg their currencies to the dollar at an undervalued exchange rate in pursuit of export-led growth. In return, they reinvest their loot back into the US, which acts as an anchor and consumer of last resort. In some respects, Bretton Woods II appears like a giant money laundering cartel. You buy my goods and, in return, I give you the money back in the form of a loan. It is, perhaps, no surprise that it took a credit market crash to bring that macroeconomic scam to an end." ~ Financial Times Wolfgang Munchau, November 25 2007
“If anything characterizes the 21st century, it’s our inability to restrain ourselves for the benefit of other people."

~ John Sawhill, Farmland Preservation website www.farmlandcenter.org
"After nearly 15 years of playing professionally in clubs, he finds them changed. To him, most places are no longer about dancing and having fun. They are a tangible representation of what I like to call “the universal lie,” he explained. It’s a place where people pull up in their Porsche, show off their new Marc Jacobs bag or jewelry or, ‘Hey, look at me in V.I.P. with five bottles on my table.’ All this stuff means I’m someone in God’s eyes. But that’s the lie.”
~ DJ AM, in NYTimes.com (05.01.07)
Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah's Ark :
One : Don't miss the boat.
Two : Remember that we are all in the same boat.
Three : Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
Four : Stay fit When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
Five : Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
Six : Build your future on high ground.
Seven: For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
Eight : Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
Nine : When you're stressed, float a while.
Ten : Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
Eleven : No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting...
"If you stop telling lies about me I'll stop telling the truth about you." ~ AStevenson to RNixon

"'Now tell me, Sir' (Candide) said to the scholar (Martin), what do you think about it all? What is your opinion of moral and physical evil?
'Sir,' replied Martin, 'the clergy of Surinam accused me of denying the divinity of Christ, but what I believe is that man was created by the forces of evil and not by the forces of good.'
'...(The devil) meddles so much with the affairs of this world,' replied Martin, 'that he may be living inside me, as well as everywhere else. But I confess that when I survey this globe, or rather this globule, I am forced to the conclusion that God has abandoned it to some mischievous power,...'"

"'You remember that story that I told you,' continued Candide, 'about the love of those two Oreillon girls for their monkeys. Doesn't that astonish you?'
'Not at all,' said Martin. 'I don't see anything strange in an infatuation like that. I have seen so many extraordinary things, that nothing is extraordinary any longer.'
'Do you think,' said Candide, 'that men have always massacred each other, as they do to-day, that they have always been false, cozening, faithless, ungrateful, thieving, weak, inconstant, mean-spirited, envious, greedy, drunken, miserly, ambitious, bloody, slanderous, debauched, fanatic, hypocritical, and stupid?
'Do you think,' said Martin, 'that hawks have always eaten pigeons when they could find them?'
'Of course I do,' said Candide.
'Well,' said Martin, 'if hawks have always had the same character, why should you suppose that men have changed theirs?'" ~Voltaire's Candide, & TT in December 2006
