Organic Tails and Chronicles in Trinidad Tobago

One,...

so here is what i just found out.
there are aquaponic producers, just like regular soil farmers who say they are doing organic but using sprays like dipel. and these people are supplying restaurants and gourmet shops. wow.

http://www.yates.com.au/whats-new/natures-way-caterpillar-killer-dipel/

this is what i told the producer: if you cant put it on a plate and eat it, or in a liquid and drink it, you are using chemicals. i had to ask him if he was a chemist or ever studied chemistry...we think school was a waste of time but it tells you basic things in life later like what is chemical and poison and what is not. what are natural elements and man made compounds. what is life sustaining and what is life debilitating...

wow. wow!!!

Two,...

I am learning so much
it is amusing
and i am being taken right back into my early career days and years...
the reality of being in a male dominated field
the difference is, when i was in america the males were all white
now, they can be anybody..but it is just that: the males.

so watch them engaging me on the phone ...
i done sounding like i am sixteen
and these pirates so want to try to stand over me, talk down to me, or try to effect authority toward me. and guess what that makes me do.
pull out my cojones.

hear one today. i found him on a thread asking and seeking advice and feedback on getting into aquaponics...so i called to inquire as to his advancement and progress...he is not doing anything. he is frustrated as no hell. he said so. he is waiting on the government to get their 'fingers out their ass' and he is on a pipe dream. he said that too...all the things he is trying to do is outside his hands and control.. it was interesting hearing this story...the stories too i am hearing. and this, my friends, was a white dude I am almost sure....anyway, that be his pail, and yet, he is giving me all this wrong and wrong headed information. and talking to me about american and european certification and making commercial success meanwhile the man has neither pot nor window or land...and challenging my propensity for organic. only...so he goes as I start to go toe to toe with him..."you called me for opinion" i said no i did not. I called you to find out about your progress. but that comment struck me. the man is doing not one ass, has not moved forward from a thread since 2011 and is thinking i am still somebody could still be calling him for information or opinion. and that is my point..the arrogance of the ignorant, the presumptuous, the dubious...without them knowing anything about you and what you come with or present...

the other thing they try to do is size you up with the general oftused questions of :
where is your land? what do you farm? and how much money have you invested so far
and I love it when I can answer all their questions, fuck them up and tie it with a bow to say, "you may recall I introduced this conversation in the context of me trying to find producers to contract for long term production"
ah. shutup.

and i know a big part of it is the male psyche and dominance in this place, but it made me wonder on a real level...how many agricultural producers are their in this specialty, organic or technological production framework...
i know for the last few years when I was present for government land give aways, i was almost always the only woman. among cocoa and coffee producers, i have never seen another one. and this organic thing...commercial, technological, organizational, advocacy...and integrating on all levels not just the grassroots, i have yet to meet another.

and woo sah, to be a black pikney chile too...just today Lucille the Ironer was saying to me, "M-- who you can go to and tell them you fortynine?" smh. all the markers of legitimacy, maturity and authority lost to me...and so I have to manage them...

it is making me take a step back..and when i encounter these folks to be quiet...

but the whole prospect of the thing is very scary
this venture is way more derelict than i thought
there is no one overseeing, consulting, providing services, knowhow, support or information
and all man jack walking in and doing all manner of things:

folk are doing aquaponics and hydroponics that is not organic at all
then as i spoke to the last person, i realize we are still so colonial...and ignorance is not to any one ethnic group alone, them folk you all worship are just as backwards and stuck you just would never know it -- the man telling me how contract chicken, national agriculture, commercial agriculture and ministry agriculture are a total mess, in shambles and about toe fall apart but that is exactly what he is trying to get into still. and still talking about mortgaging the house to get into old tired failing formulas. I swear to you. Really? but wanting to argue with me and discredit my suggestions for new approaches. i was not even trying to convince him just telling him i am on a different vibration.. and i said keep my number and if down the line you realize your outlook is not feasible and you are open to new ideas, give me a call and that is when he outlined all he knew that was failing...sigh

i thought i knew where to start and continue with this organic thing but i dont.. you cant supply if no one is doing organic, really. you cant work and integrate and partner with hard headed misguided soulless folk whose interest solely is money. i had to tell this man, listen if you focus on people's health and wholesome food you would make loads of money. he asked me incredulously if growing wholesome healthy food was really my drive and motivation? as if i am the one crazy. Vibrations and Frequencies I tell you. that and soul. where am i going? with who? whom?

the organic chronicles continue

Three,...

Another producer I spoke to, who apparently is running an award winning innovative system at his home, makes it available upon initial contact to all who make inquiries on his business page, or looking to purchase his product to come and see his system. I want to introduce you to a word: Transparency!.

He is very responsive and professional: By phone and text; Answering and communicating on every question and inquiry. When busy and unable to, he will text you to inform of his timeline.

He will be supplying the order I was trying to put together, not in total for he does not have everything. Here is what he told me...he phased out of lettuce because of his clientele and his need to maintain a standard and quality he could not continue with the diversification and so now only focuses on herbs. So i had to try and source lettuce elsewhere. But by the time we got past the phone conversations to email and clarification on the order, I am getting much more. I am getting microgreens, basil and mint.

He is also amending his pricing structure to accommodate my one time and small purchase, as of now; but it is my intention to continue working with him if my client is so interested and if he can accommodate small orders. I know for my household purchases, I dont need or use a lot. I bought $200 of lettuce greens, basil and microgreens last week and I have yet to put a legitimate dent in the basil, half the greens are there despite me eating four platefulls and the microgreens disintegrate fast. I ate them three times.

This operator is Chinese. By the end you will see why i itemize the ethnicity of operators and match that to outcomes and experiences.

Four,...

By the end of the day, I had spoken to two more operators, both white males.
All the legitimate, top producing organic operations are run by  males

I spoke to one operator who had in fact, just months ago, shut down his operations. We had a pleasant talk on the phone but it did not last long enough to hear the length and breadth of his experience. He did say he shut it down for two reasons: One, lack of labor.  Two, he could not find anyone he could trust.

There is that word : Trust

If i had to say thus far what are the watchwords for these here chronicles I would say they are Knowledge, Integrity, Transparency and Trust.

I felt though that it would  and must be a pretty egregious situation for a businessman and operator to shut down an aquaponic food generating system for lack of trust and labor. So you could find nobody who would see the value of being employed and associated with such a venture?! You could come up with no novel arrangement that would entice individuals to share with you their time and effort. I cant wait to hear the story and ferret out a feeling

But this provides for an opportunity. And if you go back to the top where I started documenting this chronicle you will see that I could have possibly put this operator/land  and system owner together with the person who was seeking to launch, enter, acquire and operate an aquaponic system. But alas, I would never be seen to have that legitimacy and present such cherry offers would I>

But it is a chance for me. This operator is receptive to such an idea, such a contractual arrangement and we plan to discuss it further after Thursday. I shall hope Mercury Retrograde is not in effect and the timing of the planets is right for us beings to have a fruitful and friendly conversation.

This gentleman was also very profitable to talk to for he put me in touch with the other operator who will supply me with my order for this coming Thursday. He appears by all accounts to be a top producer in the country if not the longest. I think he mentioned twenty something years he has been in agriculture and wholesome organic culture. I await to get clarification on that. But he is preparing me a sample pack that is or might be a courtesy, mere small dollars for they are remnants of customer orders and leave backs. Small as is the other order.

With this gentleman, having spoken to six other producers during the day, I was able to have a capstone conversation with him. He is aware and mentions the lack of integrity among many producers. He is aware that many are calling their products organic and are not. He is aware that many are using gmo stock and calling their product organic.  He is also the only producer that is operating multiple growth systems from soil to aquaponics. He also indicated that he does not associate with any other producer in the country>

I think overall after my day of interaction I think it was a dead in the water pipedream to think I could have integrated all the producers into a lobby of sorts. They are too varied and more than that, this is not that culture or nation of that practice but we shall see. I shall pursue again his associates.

But what began as an information gathering exercise to see who I can source products from on a short timeline resulted in a personal experience. How do people respond to you when you ask them questions about their operations. One black gentleman wanted to know who i was and asked it in such as way as to be bristled and offended. Telling me he was in the airport on the way out the country and there was no one to contact to facilitate either my order or getting clarification for future interface> When I finally got an agreed upon email to continue, i decided not to pursue it. If you are running an operation where you are the sole honcho, that is okay, you are not in a business that I can rely on  to accomplish my tasks and goals.

I think of the questions I received from some of the individuals, both times not ending well. I can tell their questions were attempts to prove my illegitimacy rather than any honest attempt to understand how it is I am coming to this venture. And as I write that it hits me too...I seemed to be operating from a totally foreign and different space than most if not all. I reserve that comment away from the two producers I am doing resulting business . Both seem to operate out of a level of integrity that takes one away from a money only standpoint. And I am not operating in this from or for money at all. I just wanted to set up a wholesome food supply. For both my home, possible clients who may seek me out and people looking for connections to supply. I did email with one such person.

She organizes what appears to be an organic food collective but it is so grassroots it also teaches me that there are systems of exchange that are way below these commercial operator radars. The prices at which they offer their products is far below what this collective can contend. They give out baskets of produce for $125. That is the low cost for a ziploc bag of salad greens.

Getting back to intention, vibration and level of operating: either for sole  financial purposes or from the perspective of quality of food. And I think to be honest with myself, I probably ought not be in this business . I am an outlier, outside the range of likemindedness. But we shall see how this evolves and what evolves. It may not go further than this week's supply.

The price of this kind of quality is high. Upwards of $600 for some products monthly...greens and microgreens.
It puts a level and quality of food security at luxury and is it sustainable for clients and households..but the fact is it is a high end engagement. Eating being and living healthy always was/is.

Five, ...

I would so take over the farm operation of this gentleman but one big elephant in the room exists. It is in St. Joseph, right smack dab center of the area in which this pp government had been planning and scheming to quietly mash up a very green lush and historic site of agriculture and estate lands, springs and rivers. I find it amazing the extent to which daily living and peace hinges precariously on the devilments, poltiical and financial schemes of governments and ministers of money and the day. Whole lives, histories, heritages and futures can be disrupted and destroyed. Dreams and Plans aborted. It is amazing. The ways in which life and living proves it is not your own. You are not in control.

I will end this here.
These are the chronicles of one day's fare of seeking Organics, Quality of Food Supply and aims of Personal Health and livelihood. Today/Yesterday was agriculture. Tomorrow Art and Heritage

[so...

what are they feeding the fish in organic aquaponics

0.o

  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue : 'organic' food

  • Maven Huggins : who says? how do you know? from where? what manufacture? did you do the chemical assay? like the organic food they feed commercial chicken, pigs, beef and turkey?

  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue :yup d same 'organic' stuff dey feeding everybody...like d organic plastic/rubber apparantly used to make those eat fresh sandwiches lol
  • Maven Huggins : hahahaha...woi woi

i sorry for us yes, me especially

  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue: it not easy. i have been buying 'organic' produce for a couple months now only to find out dat d farmer to slip and say he does spray with some kinda expensive pesticide. when my friend told me that i was like ammmmmmmmm.....ok is not d cheap pesticide but dat dont make it organic...i felt deceived. ..i mean i will eat it, but dont say something is organic if it isnt.

  • Maven Huggins : GIRL...will tag you on something...and i have not bothered to add this element to the record. i am too heartbroken...but i see now why my girlfriend Samantha Antoine has the bar that she does...the fraud in this place is unparalleled I think

  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue : i have been watching it unfold. u wont believe the thesis im working on now is based on organic agriculture so watching all of this was like wow.

  • Maven Huggins :i would like to read that thesis..

  • Maven Huggins:  wow. how you measuring that when people dont even know what organic is? when there is such ignorance about food (watering fields and growing plants with drain water (aranguez, etc); planting behind and in front of chemical plants runoff (macoya), and the fraudulence of saying organic when it is just another degree of poison? when people do not view food as preventative health? when there is such a lack of respect for agriculture, land, environment and ecology? when in this culture people only value material things, not esoteric unseen ? when kfc is considered food?...when people have no financial literacy?

  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue: well we will see the results. it just may show those very same things. that most ppl r clueless about the food situation. i tell u the more i di research the less i wanted to eat bc of the level of pesticide residues tested on some of our fresh food. i was like dammmmm and is like d real toxic stuff, category 1 and 2
  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue :so u try to eat healthy by eating fresh fruits and veggies but d amount of dam pesticide residues on d dam ting is best u dont eat it bc it negating the positives of eating fresh....

  • Maven Huggins :i know. illiteracy is prevalent here. we not just a little bit illiterate. we are A LOT. even people with all these degrees and certification. I was thinking today people cannot process, problem solve or calculate given information. They are worse as to be total failures to determine what information to gather if not provided with input information when solving a problem..so you see it in terms of reading instructions on things like pesticides. so the default is just to use and if it is good in little, it would be better in much
  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue : precicely...d problem is over use..so u know what this pesticide will stop dis well lemme throw some more to be safe and lemme throw a lil more again wen i gona pick so d stuff will stay good. is overuse and cocktails of pesticides that are used and not waiting for enough time post spraying to pick

  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue : the amount of pesticides that our soil has absorbed over the years might be donkey years before that soil could be in a state that u could say u want to grow organic in it..it has just become too saturated over the years

  • Maven Huggins: well funny you should say the latter. was in consultation today on a skin issue and they told me of a friend suffering from some ailment in trincity that doctors can not detect and how the house has all this mold and whatnot and the person talking to me told me she grew up in that area and it used to be agriculture/farming...she feels it is chemicals reposited in the soil where they built the houses and just some have hypersensitivity. this woman saying this out of instinct and intuition..so imagine what must really be happening.
  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue: u see what i mean...steuppppssssssssss...like u have to live in a dam bubble]
  • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue: dis whole 'system' is bout money...design of food pyramid making ppl sick....ppl buy drugs to get better....which have worst side effects dan original sickness...ppl wise up decide to try a cleane/better diet....now d fruits and veggies have a seta kiss me beep beep pesticide residue dat gettin ppl sick..go buy more drugs...and so yu back to square one! ...i tell u if i only start eh i go wana stop

  • Maven Huggins :the corporate structure overstructuring all parts is not a conspiracy, not a secret . Very real. very well mapped

    • Adafih Noble- Lue Shue: yupp is everything around us down to d hair products .....i used to say if u take on dis system too much u will go live in d mountains, stop wear clothes and eat green fig whole day and drink coconut water. de ppl go say u mad..dis time u r d one dat is aware n everybody else blind
